9. Al, 2 persons, Stratford. Plant a larger vegetable garden this year and freeze produce for use all winter. Also planting more trees on our property. |
8. Brian, 1 person, Wausau. My favorite argument is this: I burn nearly 600 calories on my commute to work, which adds about 10-15 minutes either way on my bike. I would have to spend about an hour in the gym to achieve that same amount of calories burned, plus gas to get to the gym and money for membership. So not only am I saving that money, but also the gas to get to work, and then I have the extra time as well. In a sense I'm paying myself to exercise when I ride to work. Hard to put a price on that. |
7. Sara, 2 people, St. Point. I will use cloth diapers as much as possible once my baby is born, and will start walking to and from work again when I return in June. |
6. Anne, individual, Wausau. I'm finally getting a composting bin up (am ordering one today from Marathon County Solid Waste); now that the weather is warmer I plan to use my bike as much as possible; Oh, and after finding out about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch I'm now avoiding plastic as much as possible - like buying peanut butter in glass jars even if it costs more. |
5. Sara, individual, Stettin. I will stop using bottled water. Having wonderful weather helps with having electronic-free evenings. I want to get out and enjoy our great summer evenings! |
4. Kit, individual,1, St. Point. I will try to find someone to carpool to work with since I live in Point and drive to Wausau every day. Although I did sign up for rideshare and no takers yet! |
3. Christy, residence, 3, Junction City. I, along with my children, will clean up trash along Cty Hwy E in the Town of Eau Pleine, Portage County. |
2. Brian, residence, 2, Rib Mountain. We pledge to follow up on an energy evaluation of our home that recommended insulating concrete foundation walls in an unfinished basement. |
1. Michelsen Music, business, Wausau. Instead of buying new toner cartridges, we have just switched to using refills. (TonerKits.com is a good source.) One employee already comes to work on foot. The rest of us are planning to bike to work when weather and time permit. We use fuel-efficient vehicles and minimize electricity use by keeping lights off when not in use. We also use a cleaning process for brass horns that minimizes toxic chemical use - all chemicals used for our brass horn cleanings are approved by the EPA for down-the-drain disposal. We pledge to use 100% post-consumer recycled paper starting now. |
